Teacher Training at ELA

ELA is the ideal place to come for pre-service teacher training for English language teachers.

If you are currently teaching English in your own country but would like to upgrade your qualifications or would just like to gain more experience and ideas for your own professional development, ELA’s Teacher Development programme can help you develop your teaching skills.

Approach

Our approach to teacher training is consistent with our approach to teaching our language students. Our courses are highly practical and engage trainees in real tasks designed to help real teachers in real classrooms. Yes, we will cover theoretical issues; however we at ELA are aware that what teachers really need and want is to put theory into practice. As a teacher, you want to leave a teacher training course excited about trying out the new strategies and ideas you have developed during your training with your own students in your own classroom. Our approach to teacher development will help you to achieve this.

Programme

ELA is able to provide a suitable professional development opportunity for teachers from different teaching backgrounds, at different stages of their careers and with different levels of English language proficiency.

TKT – Teaching Knowledge Test

TKT is for teachers of English or for people who want to become teachers of English. It is a popular way to show that you understand the basic principles of teaching. Many governments include TKT in their teacher training for English. ELA’s Teacher Development programme follows a course which prepares teachers for the classroom as well as preparing them for the TKT exam. It is not compulsory to take the TKT exam at the end of the course, but it is an option for teachers who would like to gain this qualification.

Teachers on the TKT course at Edinburgh Language Academy should have a minimum English language level of Intermediate (PET; IELTS 4.0). However, TKT is also suitable for teachers with much higher levels of English. Our teacher development programme also includes general English language development sessions.

The TKT is in three sections. These are:

1.      Language and background to language learning

2.      Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching

3.      Managing the teaching and learning process
